How do you know whether a franchise fits you?

People often begin a franchise search by asking:

Which franchises are the best?

I think there's a better question:

Which franchises fit what I want to build?

A great franchise for one person could be completely wrong for another.

Before looking at brands, think about a few things.

What Role Do You Want?

Do you want to work inside the business every day?

Manage employees?

Build a sales organization?

Hire a manager?

Eventually own multiple locations?

What Are Your Financial Goals?

Are you trying to replace a salary?

Build a second income stream?

Create a larger enterprise?

Build an asset you may eventually sell?

What Are Your Lifestyle Goals?

Do you want traditional business hours?

Are nights and weekends acceptable?

Do you want to work from home?

Are you comfortable with retail hours?

What Are You Good At?

Sales?

Leadership?

Networking?

Operations?

Managing people?

Community involvement?

What Are You Willing to Learn?

No franchise eliminates the need to develop new skills.

The goal isn't to find a franchise that perfectly matches everything you've already done.

It's to find a business where your strengths, goals, resources, and willingness to learn line up with what the model requires.

That's when franchise selection becomes much more useful than simply scrolling through lists of brands.
