What Is Franchise Validation?
One of the most valuable parts of evaluating a franchise is something called validation.
Validation is when a prospective franchise owner speaks directly with people who already own the franchise.
This is where the opportunity starts becoming real.
The franchisor can explain how the business is designed to operate.
Existing franchisees can tell you what operating it actually feels like.
What Should You Ask?
Good validation questions might include:
· Why did you choose this franchise?
· What did your first year look like?
· How well did training prepare you?
· What does the franchisor do particularly well?
· Where could support be better?
· What does a typical week look like?
· How difficult is hiring?
· Where do customers come from?
· What surprised you after opening?
· Would you make the same decision again?
Don't treat validation as a hunt for one perfect answer.
Every owner has a different market, background, personality, and experience.
Instead, listen for patterns.
If five owners independently mention the same strength, that's meaningful.
If five owners independently mention the same challenge, that's meaningful too.
Validation isn't about asking current owners to make the decision for you.
It's about using their experience to better understand the decision you're making.
