What Happens At A Franchise Discovery Day?
Discovery Day can sound like the finish line in the franchise selection process.
It is not.
For many franchise systems, Discovery Day is a later-stage opportunity for a prospective franchisee and the franchisor to spend more time together, meet key people, and decide whether there is a good fit on both sides.
The format varies by brand. It may happen at the franchisor's headquarters, in a regional setting, or virtually. Some brands call it something different. The purpose, however, is usually similar: move beyond presentations and get a clearer picture of the people and system you may be joining.
What Should You Expect?
A Discovery Day may include meetings with leaders from operations, training, marketing, technology, real estate, finance, or franchise development. You may also learn more about the culture of the organization and what the franchisor expects from its owners.
This is your chance to see whether the people behind the brand match what you have been hearing throughout the process.
You Are Still Doing Due Diligence
A common mistake is treating Discovery Day as the point where the decision has already been made.
It should still be part of the investigation.
Good questions might include:
· What does support look like after opening?
· How does the franchisor measure franchisee performance?
· What do strong franchisees tend to do differently?
· Where do new owners most often struggle?
· How does the leadership team respond when a franchisee disagrees with a decision?
· How has the system changed during the last few years?
The Franchisor Is Evaluating You Too
A healthy franchise relationship is not just about whether you can afford the investment.
The franchisor may be asking whether you are coachable, whether your expectations are realistic, whether you understand the owner role, and whether you are likely to represent the brand well in your market.
That two-way evaluation is a good thing. A franchise agreement can create a long relationship. Both sides should want the fit to make sense.
Do Not Let the Event Create Artificial Urgency
Discovery Day can be exciting. You may meet impressive leaders, see the brand up close, and begin picturing yourself as an owner.
That is exactly why it is important to stay disciplined.
Go back to the criteria you established at the beginning. Review what you learned during validation. Revisit the FDD. Talk with your professional advisors. Make sure the opportunity still fits your finances, goals, skills, and desired lifestyle.
Discovery Day should help you understand the franchise more clearly. It should not replace thoughtful decision-making.
